Five Places in San Francisco to Enjoy Brunch on a Lovely Patio

With spring in full swing and summer fast approaching, it’s time to think about places where you can enjoy a meal outside. And what could be lovelier than brunch on a comfortable, well-appointed patio? Exactly. This is San Francisco, though, so it’s best to remember that our weather in the summer months can be unpredictable! Bring some warm layers in case the fog or chill doesn’t burn off, or the breeze kicks in.

Foreign Cinema (2534 Mission St. at 21st St.)
Since 1999, Foreign Cinema has been offering one of San Francisco’s best brunches. In fact, it’s become something of a modern classic, but that doesn’t mean it ever gets tired. The brunch menu includes wonderfully seasonal egg dishes and artful salads, along with fresh oysters, many of them hard-to-find varieties. The full bar, sparkling wine choices, excellent Bloody Mary, and the fact that they take reservations would make Foreign Cinema a top contender, but the patio is what takes it to the next level. The courtyard has a great industrial-chic vibe, with fresh flowers and twinkly lights to keep it all comfortable and elegant. Website

Marla Bakery (3619 Balboa St. at 37th Ave.)
It’s a big of a trek out to the newly opened Marla Bakery in the sleepy Outer Richmond neighborhood, but with one bite of their croissant, it’s all worth it. The back patio is beautifully landscaped and feels a bit like a garden wonderland. So many things are made in-house, including the exceptional baked goods, plus there are plenty of savory egg dishes and excellent coffee.

Sparrow Bar and Kitchen (1640 Haight St. at Clayton St.)
Haight Street is an essential stop for any visit to San Francisco, and one glimpse at the patio at Sparrow Bar and Kitchen immediately feels like an urban oasis. The wooden deck includes heaters for days when the fog rolls in, surrounded by a canopy of neighboring trees. There’s something for everyone on the menu, including dishes for vegans and vegetarians, plus a hanger steak and egg dish for die-hard carnivores.

Fable (558 Castro St. at 19th St.)
The beautifully landscaped back patio at Fable in the Castro includes a fountain and tropical plants, perfect for a sunny day. On the menu are well-executed egg dishes, along with lighter choices including several salads. The interior is as charming as they come, too, so you’re sure to feel transported.

Central Kitchen (3000 20th St. at Florida St.)
Sometimes, you want the outdoor brunch experience but the weather simply won’t cooperate. On those days, turn to the Mission’s Central Kitchen, where the dining room is actually a covered patio. There are multiple fountains, lots of natural light, and stylish modern landscaping, but you’ll stay warm and dry even on the rainiest of days. The seasonal food is creative and delicious, plus there’s a bacon-date sticky bun on the menu. That’s right: bacon-date sticky bun.
