Welcome to WildCard at the Exploratorium
About the Exhibition
Remember when all it took to enter another world was a cardboard box, some scissors, glue and a bit of imagination? The Exploratorium invites visitors to return to that feeling in Welcome to WildCard, open daily June 17 through Sept. 4. Share the experience of a world of whimsy, creativity and innovative thinking in a physical landscape built out of cardboard and brought to life by imagination. There is no map and there are no rules to this immersive experience that will continue to grow inside visitors' imagination even after they've returned home. The exhibition also includes a unique Cardboard Café, modeled on a 1950’s diner, where visitors can have a cup of coffee and a snack. Welcome to WildCard is a doorway into a new way of thinking how everyday objects can be transformed into intricate works of creativity and innovation.
For visitors 18+, After Dark: Immerse will include “Cardboard Costume Closet,” a three-hour intensive workshop on cardboard costuming techniques and a chance for visitors to build their own costumes of cardboard. The evening will also include a presentation on Virtual Reality by Kathleen MacGuire of the Exploratorium’s Cinema Arts team and Tapigami, an elaborate world constructed entirely of masking tape by artist Danny Scheible.
Welcome to WildCard is brought to the Exploratorium by the Cardboard Institute of Technology, a creative artist collective creating mainly in cardboard. Their spontaneous collaborations, called “builds,” feature a rotating roster of faculty members and occur at exhibitions, festivals and other events worldwide.
The Exploratorium is conveniently located at Pier 15 on The Embarcadero—just south of PIER 39. Entrance to Welcome to WildCard is included with paid general museum admission, which can be purchased on-site or online here. Welcome to WildCard runs from June 17 to Sept. 4, 2017.
