Madera County is known as "California's Gateway to Yosemite". Join us on an unforgettable journey along the Fossils to Falls Trail through Madera County. Start your journey off Highway 99 in Chowchilla at the Fossil Discovery Center. Youll find the fossilized remains of sabre toothed cats, mammoths and more, all found right there on site. Then move on to the award winning, family-owned wineries of the Madera Wine Trail. Or, stop by Homegrown Cellars and learn why the city of Madera is known as the Heart of Pomegranate Country. As you continue to make your way towards Yosemite, you'll find several foothill communities. Throughout the towns of Coarsegold, North Fork and Oakhurst, you'll find numerous museums and art galleries showcasing the area's rich history and talented artists. Stop at Bass Lake to see why Sunset Magazine named it one of the West's Best Lakes, while enjoying blue waters and mountain vistas. Tour the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway out of North Fork, and discover a land that's been called a Secret Yosemite. Then continue north towards Fish Camp, and ride through history aboard The Logger, a nearly century old steam locomotive at the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad. From there you're only moments from Yosemite, and the south entrance takes you to historic town of Wawona, the spectacular Glacier Point, and by Tunnel View, one of the most photographic vistas in the world.
