Chez Spencer - Hot
Mission District eatery run by veteran San Francisco restaurateurs. Open
hearth kitchen with a 40 seat dining room. Casual but elegant style highly
recommended by readers. 82 14th Street @ Folsom 415-864-2191
Fringale is a wonderful French
restaurant in the SOMA area. The food is incredible-- they
really make it an art. The small bistro has a very intimate and romantic atmosphere with
highly personal service; you will need reservations here. The bar area has a fun
atmosphere for you to wait at and meet other diners. M.P. writes 8/96,
"Absolutely delightful place, fun menu, refreshing decor, friendly folks, reasonably
priced." He's right-- it'll only cost you about $30 per person for a true gourmet
meal.

Moose's
is a little bit stuffy, but has incredible California style food on Washington Square Park
in North Beach's Italian area. About $90 for two. Nice, but a little too stuffy/trendy
with only the "right" sort of people who are just a little too annoying. SF

Restaurant Lulu is a great
open warehouse style nice restaurant with a wood-burning roasting oven. All food served
family style to share with friends. A great bar too. ($60 for 2) 816 Folsom 495-5775
California style food. SF Underground rating=A+
Don't miss Lulu's Palo Alto version -
Zibibbo. We tried Zibibbo
in 2002 and were extremely impressed. Excellent small plate dishes,
entrees, and a lively bar scene. Located in a Palo Alto neighborhood with
a door like a house, but a huge warehouse within. Highly recommended by
our editors. 430 Kipling Street - Palo Alto 650-328-6722
PaulK is a Hayes Valley
neighborhood eatery near the Civic Center, Opera, and Symphony. With
Mediterranean inspired flavors and convenience to make your night on the town -
it's worth checking out.

PJ's Oyster Bed isn't that fancy but they have excellent
seafood and very few tourists out in the Sunset District. They
have a New Orleans theme and lots of fresh oysters to get ya goin... Lot's of bars nearby
to drink while you wait. Very fresh seafood for around $25 per person @ 737 Irving /
566-7775. SF Underground rating=B+
Firefly is a very homey and
critically acclaimed restaurant. A very comfortable, small restaurant in a residential
neighborhood (Noe Valley). Reservations will be necessary here as
it has many fans of the home cooking type food, without "ethnic boundaries."
4288 24th Street @ Douglas, 821-7652. A little too "cliquey" for my taste so Our
Rating is B-.
Greens is SF's best vegetarian
restaurant and located in a restored army base with a beautiful waterfront view. Very
expensive at around $50 per person, but vegetarian so good, a wolf would love it! Located
near Marina Green at Fort Mason's Building A 771-6222. Our
Rating=A
One of the Bay Area's finest chefs-- Bradley Ogden-- started One Market
which is curiously located at One Market Street! Delicious food, but a little bit
"snooty" service for $50+ per person. Perfect for businesspeople on expense
accounts, but you could probably spend your money better elsewhere. 1 Market @ Steuart in
the Financial District 777-5577 Our Rating=B

Hayes Street Grill - Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional San
Francisco fish house across the street from the Performing Arts Center--directly
across from Davies Symphony Hall and a block from the Opera House. The
whole menu benefits from the array of seasonal produce procured directly from
the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. Owner Patricia Unterman (former San Francisco
Chronicle restaurant critic) has made this restaurant her personal project.
Collaboratively the cooks choose dishes to create a balanced and tempting menu.
They use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and
seafood. Above every other consideration, they would like the freshness and
pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally raised meats to speak for
themselves. 320 Hayes Street (415) 863-5545
