S. reviewed, "One word on the Surf Motel -- VERY NOISY!
They do offer one large suite if you travel with a large family, we crammed six of us in once, and it was worth the money..."
Sam and Lily write, The Surf Motel was our best lodging experience in S.F. We are a couple from Malaysia, traveling for the
first time, to the USA.
Having visited your site, we decided to check-out Lombard Street for budget lodging. You are right, it was
definitely the better area around. We did stop at Sea Captain motel but a "dour" character at the desk didn't
really made the rainy weather then any better. So we left without even checking if there were any sour smell to the room.
We drove along the street and enquire at a few more - some of the room were rather gloomy and rundown. Some quote $50/= on Thursday
but $95/= for Friday and Saturday. There was even one that said Fri/Sat rates will depend on the manager's decision on Friday afternoon depending on
demand! Not wanting to be held hostage after moving in - we bolted!
After checking out about 6 motels, we were seriously reminding ourselves to plan our future SF trip on a weekdays. We though perhaps
we could get a flat rate deal with some of them but there appears to be some sort of "arrangement" amongst the operators there.
We were just about to give-up when we decided to gave a final go at the SURF Motel. The front desk quoted $65/- for Thurs and $75/-
on Fri/Sat with light breakfast. When we check-out the room, it was clean and pleasant albeit a bit cosy but it serves the purpose.
When we confirm the reservation, Bill, the inn-keeper even offer us a flat rate deal! Parking is free and we even got ourselves
covered parking. The heater works well, no noticeable street noise, the hot coffee making facility makes the cold and rainy nights warmer. There is even
a built-in hair dryer - the first we come across in the motels we have stayed in California.
Besides the room and location, the best part of our stay was Bill the innkeeper who offer good and practical advice on
where to go and where to try and avoid. He can even gave ratings on the some of the restaurants. We
definitely recommend Surf Motel anyone and look forward to staying there and saying hello to Bill again.

This was one of the worst motel experiences
I've had in my life. It all started with them
trying to scam us into a King room. They told
us we had reserved smoking and the only non-
smoking they had left were larger. We fell for
it and paid the extra . Afterwards we checked
our reservation and it was for non-smoking.
They were clearly scamming us. Aside from
that, the beds only come with two small
pillows, making it uncomfortable to sit in bed
and watch TV. It is located on a busy street
and the walls offer zero insulation from the
noise. There was an ironing board but no iron.
And the toilet made a weird noise like a sick
cow when you flush it. Motel 6 or Super 8
would have been better for the money.
