The 5 San Francisco Museum Exhibitions You Can't Miss in 2019

San Francisco has a prized collection of must-see museums. Each is worth a visit (and sometimes, it's free); but to make planning your cultural experience a little easier, we've singled out the five can't-miss exhibitions that will be on display in San Francisco in 2019.

"Black Refractions: Highlights from The Studio Museum in Harlem" at The Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD)

MoAD will be the inaugural venue for this major traveling exhibition, created by the American Federation of Arts (AFA) in collaboration with The Studio Museum in Harlem. “Black Refractions” surveys close to a century of creative achievements by artists of African descent. It includes more than sixty works by more than fifty artists across all media dating from the 1920s to the present.

On display Jan. 16 - Apr. 14, 2019

"Kimono Refashioned” at the Asian Art Museum

“Kimono Refashioned” explores the impact of kimono on global fashion, across great time and distance. Spotlighting more than 40 ensembles, accessories and artworks from close to 30 designers and artists, “Kimono Refashioned” reveals how the two-dimensional structure, cutting-edge textiles, and decorative motifs inspired by kimono have shifted the course of contemporary fashion.

On display Feb. 8 - May 5, 2019

“Monet: The Late Years” at the de Young Museum

The first exhibition in 20 years dedicated to the artist's late career, “Monet: The Late Years” will trace the evolution of Monet’s work from 1913, when he embarked on a reinvention of his painting style and into the increasing abstraction of his bold, late works, to his death in 1926. More than 20 prime examples of Monet’s beloved water lily paintings will be on view, many of which have never before been seen in the U.S.
