The inaugural season of SailGP brings cutting-edge racing to San Francisco, May 4-5.

SailGP Hits San Francisco Bay in 2019

2019 marks the debut of a new fan-centric grand prix racing championship, SailGP, in San Francisco. The City will play host to the second stop of the inaugural season of SailGP on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5. This exciting event will introduce U.S. audiences to a redefined form of sailing, which includes a redesigned and supercharged boat class, the F50.

Event Information

Teams representing six nations—the United States, Australia, China, France, Great Britain, and Japan—will race on identical 50-foot foiling catamarans, known as the F50. The world's fastest, most techologically advance flying catamaran, the F50 is expected to break the 50-know (60mph/100kph) speed barrier.


SailGP's global field comes to San Francisco in 2019

The competing teams will race just off the Marina Yacht Club Peninsula, located in the heart of San Francisco Bay, with the Golden Gate Bridge serving as a stunning and dramatic backdrop. The national teams will compete in a total of five short-format fleet races across the two days, culminating with the top two teams facing off in a match-race finale to determine the winner on Sunday afternoon.

The United States SailGP team is comprised of some of the best and brightest athletes: Rome Kirby of Newport, RI (helmsman); Riley Gibbs of Long Beach, CA (wing trimmer); Hans Henken of Coronado, CA (flight controller); Mac Agnese of Fort Lauderdale, FL (Grinder);Dan Morris of Newport, RI (grinder) and Taylor Canfield of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands (flight controller-tactician)San Francisco SailGP is the second stop in a series of five events taking place throughout the year and around the world in 2019. Spearheaded by Olympian Sir Russell Coutts and Oracle founder Larry Ellison, SailGP is sanctioned by World Sailing. The inaugural SailGP event will kick off in Sydney (February 15-16), followed by San Francisco (May 4-5), New York (June 21-22) and Cowes (August 10-11). The final stop will be Marseille (September 20-22), where a winner-takes-all, $1 million match-race final will occur on the last day between the season’s top-two teams.

All six teams will in San Francisco for two weeks of practice prior to the start of San Francisco SailGP.
