2020 marks the return of SailGP, the global championship that is redefining the sports of sailing. The City will again play host as the global league makes its second stop of the season on Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3.
Teams representing seven nations—the United States, Australia, France, Great Britain, Japan, Spain and Denmark — will race on identical 50-foot foiling catamarans, known as the F50. The world's fastest, most technologically advanced flying catamaran, the F50 broke the 50-knot (60mph/100kph) speed barrier in Season 1's racing.
The adrenaline-filled racing will take place in the heart of San Francisco Bay, with the Golden Gate Bridge serving as a stunning and dramatic backdrop. The official viewing area is once again located on the Marina Yacht Club Peninsula. Attracting 22,000 spectators in the first year, this ticketed area along the water’s edge will be the center of the festivities.
After an official practice day on Friday, May 1, two days of action-packed fleet races begin on Saturday, May 2, with the winner-takes-all match race finale on Sunday, May 3. San Francisco SailGP is the second stop in a series of five events taking place throughout the year and around the world in 2020.
The first SailGP 2020 event will kick off in Sydney (February 27-28), followed by San Francisco (May 2-3), New York (June 12-13) and Cowes (August). The final stop will be Marseille (September), where a winner-takes-all, $1 million match-race final will occur on the last day between the season’s top-two teams.
