Three San Francisco Culinary Delights in the Presidio

Not only is the Presidio where San Francisco started, it’s also a great place to find some of the city’s best homegrown food and drink. Here are three city classics available within the national park.

Chowder in a Bread Bowl

San Francisco made clam chowder its own by serving it in a sourdough bread bowl, famous with locals and visitors alike. But you don't have to go to Fisherman's Wharf or a seafood specialty restaurant to get one. The Presidio's Round House Cafe, located in the visitor plaza near the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center, serves a delicious version, with a view of the bridge to go with it. It's perfect to fuel you up before a walk across the bridge or a hike in the park.

Avocado Toast

We're not saying that San Franciscans invented toast - or even avocado toast - but residents of the city have certainly helped fuel the fancy toast trend. TRANSIT, in the Presidio's Main Post, offers a new classic breakfast avocado toast with an optional egg topping, or toast with hummus for afternoon snacking. Paired with spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the city's skyline, this is one toast experience not to miss.

Craft Beer

Fort Point lends its name to the park's signature craft beer. Founded in 2014, Fort Point Beer, brewed right in the Presidio, is served throughout the Presidio at TRANSIT, Arguello Restaurant, and The Commissary. Between May and October, Presidio Twilight on Thursdays and Presidio Picnic on Sundays are good ways to find this local beer. Presidio Social Club also offers Fort Point Beer on its menu to complement its "retro-California" atmosphere.

The Presidio is easily accessible via the free PresidiGo Shuttle or San Francisco's Muni system. For more information on dining options and a calendar of culinary events in the Presidio, please visit the Presidio online.
