What's New: San Francisco Hotel Openings and Renovations

By the end of 2022, seven new branded and independent hotels will have debuted in San Francisco, adding to the city’s current offering of 245 properties.

San Francisco has more than 35,000 hotel rooms, with options ranging from luxury five-star properties to budget-friendly choices. In the City by the Bay, you'll find hip boutique hotels, pet-friendly abodes, and hotel suites big enough for the whole family.

2022 Hotel Openings and Renovations

• Located near San Francisco’s iconic Ferry Building on the Embarcadero, 1 Hotel San Francisco opens in June. 1 Hotel San Francisco is the city’s first mission-driven hotel that celebrates the beauty of the Bay Area’s natural environment and offers an urban oasis in the heart of the city. Part of 1 Hotels, a luxury lifestyle brand inspired by nature, the 200-room urban retreat will embrace the beauty of the Northern California landscape through reclaimed woods, native greenery, and organic textures and materials. It will feature a wellness spa, fitness center, and 5,074 square feet of meeting and event space. Terrene, its restaurant and bar, will open later this summer and echoes the refinement and natural simplicity of the 1 Hotels brand. • LUMA Hotel San Francisco is a modern, innovative hotel set to debut this June. Located in the heart of the city's vibrant Mission Bay neighborhood —adjacent to Oracle Park, Chase Center and UCSF Medical Center, the 299-room property is the first-ever hotel development in the area. The hotel will feature 7,000 square feet of meeting and event space, a spacious penthouse suite, a state-of-the-art fitness center featuring FORME fitness, partnerships with San Francisco’s community-driven craft cocktail and specialty coffee scene and a rooftop lounge with views of the city skyline and surrounding bay. The hotel will also feature several large-scale art installations, including one by San Francisco-based contemporary visual artist Jim Campbell. Website: LUMAhotelsf.com.
• Following a renovation and redesign of all public spaces and 418 guestrooms, Sir Francis Drake Hotel will reopen its doors as the Beacon Grand on June 30. The newly independent hotel will step into the 21st century while celebrating its iconic legacy. The updated design celebrates the landmark’s architectural splendor and artisanship while featuring modern sensibilities, services, and amenities. Newly activated spaces will include the bar-centric Beacon Lounge and The Library, a French Brasserie in the former Scala’s space in partnership with the group behind Left Bank and chef Roland Passot of the famed Michelin-starred La Folie, and a reimagined Starlite Room atop the hotel by the award-winning Bill Rooney Studio. • At the intersection where South of Market district (SOMA), Civic Center and Tenderloin converge, The LINE SF will endeavor to reflect the city's complex history, culture, and spirit by exploring the juxtaposition of 21st-century technology and design with the urban grittiness of this historic neighborhood. The 236-room hotel, set to open in late summer, will be home to four distinct dining and drinking experiences, including a landscaped rooftop solarium with panoramic views of the city. It will have over 2,000 square feet of event space. The 12-story Flatiron-inspired building is a contemporary interpretation of the area’s historic architecture. • The newly renovated Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco at Embarcadero is San Francisco’s premier sky-high urban retreat featuring dramatic city views from every spacious guestroom and suite. Representing iconic urban luxury, the 155-room boutique hotel is located atop the 48-story landmark building in the Financial District and ushers in a distinct hospitality experience defined by intuitive service, luxury amenities, stylish interiors, and a unique residential vibe that pays homage to the history of San Francisco. This summer the hotel will relaunch its open-air Sky Deck showcasing panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge and marina, and launch two newly renovated premium Presidential Suites, each featuring an expansive 2,000 square feet of living space and – at 800 square feet – some of San Francisco’s largest private terraces. • In March, The St. Regis San Francisco unveiled a redesign of the hotel’s guestrooms and meeting and event spaces in collaboration with Toronto-based Chapi Chapo Design, a multidisciplinary design house whose principals played key roles in the original design of the property. The St. Regis San Francisco’s 260 rooms and suites were refitted with customized furniture exclusive to the hotel. The redesign also focused on enhancing The St. Regis San Francisco’s 15,000 square feet of meeting and event spaces. On the heels of the elevated redesign of the guest rooms and meeting spaces, the property unveiled the reimagined St. Regis Bar by London-based design firm Blacksheep offering an experience that creates a welcoming atmosphere epitomizing Northern California luxury, with rich textures and soft metallics that pay tribute the city’s unique vistas. In addition to the property-wide new design elements, the space has been reconfigured to encompass a dynamic new restaurant, Astra, led by Chef de Cuisine Mikey Adams. • The Hyatt Regency San Francisco Downtown SOMA, previously known as the Park Central Hotel, debuted in February following a $70+-million-dollar reimagining. Located in the SOMA district, the hotel features 686 guestrooms – including 20 Executive Corner Suites, two Presidential Suites, one of the largest fitness studios in San Francisco, 30,00 square feet of refreshed meeting and event spaces, and a gourmet grab-and-go Marketplace and Coffee Bar. The hotel formed an exclusive, multi-faceted collaboration with San Francisco’s leading art school, the Academy of Art University, and features commissioned artwork from select students and alumni throughout the hotel. A full-service lobby bar, celebrity chef-driven restaurant, and a new Regency Club are slated to open this summer. The restaurant, La Société Bar and Café, will be led by Executive Chef Alexandre Viriot. The restaurant will be the first hotel project by Michael Mina’s new company, TableOne Hospitality. • The Stanford Court Hotel reopened after nearly two years in February. With a storied history dating back nearly 140 years, Stanford Court sits on the historic site of renowned “Big 4” railroad mogul, university founder, and U.S. senator Leland Stanford’s elaborate private mansion. Located atop Nob Hill, the hotel features 393 redesigned guestrooms, a revamped lobby restaurant offering crafted cocktails and bites to-go, and an updated 24-hour fitness center and 2,100 square feet of meeting space. In addition to the fitness center, Stanford Court provides guests day use of new Albion bicycles and Blix e-bikes, a high-tech walking tour of Nob Hill by Vizzit, custom walking, jogging and bike maps, as well as interactive Kinima virtual personal training. Website: https://www.stanfordcourt.com/.
• The 12-room Hotel Castro opened in January in its namesake neighborhood. It joins two other Kasa Living properties launched in San Francisco last year (the 35-room La Monarca in Union Square and 28-room The Addison in Pacific Heights.) The hotel uses technology such as a smartphone web app and virtual concierge to centralize services and reduce staffing needs. The hotel features modern rooms with Google hubs, private balconies, photo mosaics depicting local icons, and a rooftop patio. Its swank Lobby Bar (with a separate entrance) opened in April. 2021 Hotel Openings and Renovations

• Amsterdam-based citizenM brought its colorful and arty signature style to San Francisco’s Union Square neighborhood with the opening of the 12-story citizenM Union Square in November 2021. The 195-room hotel offers a gym, retail mezzanine, rooftop terrace and canteen serving food and drinks 24/7. The hotel boasts a standout, commissioned artwork by Los Angeles-based FriendsWithYou, the art collaboration between Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III, known for their work with the likes of Pharrell Williams and Diplo. The third-floor entrance welcomes guests not into a traditional lobby with a reception desk, but into a living room that feels like home – furnished with plenty of books, art and furniture. Styling items reflect the liberal, young, revolutionary spirit of San Francisco. The property is the first hotel owned and operated by citizenM in San Francisco. Website: https://www.citizenm.com/.
• Hotel Stratford reopened in November 2021 in Union Square. The eight-story historic hotel was originally constructed in 1910 and underwent an extensive multimillion renovation to update the property’s 95 rooms and common areas. The hotel lobby was designed by MPADA, a local women-run architecture and interior design firm, and features plush blue velvet seating accented by metallic Jeff Koons-inspired dog sculptures for a playful and artful touch. Situated on the famed Powell Street Cable Car line, the boutique property provides a charming retreat from travelers’ urban adventures. Website: https://www.hotelstratford.com/.
• Kimpton Alton Hotel debuted in May 2021 in San Francisco’s iconic Fisherman’s Wharf neighborhood. The hotel’s namesake, Alton Kelley (the famed artist whose psychedelic poster art of the 60s and classic rock posters made him a member of the famous “Big Five”) speaks to the overall artsy vibe of the hotel, which features a diversified collection of art pieces from expansive collages to large photographs to sculptural yarn-and-wood creations. Featuring an elevated, unpretentious guest experience and a retro-chic, rock-and-roll vibe, the 248-room hotel is also home to acclaimed chef Francis Ang’s first restaurant concept, Abacá, a contemporary Filipino-Californian restaurant. • Closed for multimillion-dollar renovations on Sept. 19, 2019, and relaunched briefly in early 2020, The Clift Royal Sonesta Hotel officially reopened for business in May 2021, with renewed, light-filled public spaces and sumptuous yet modern rooms. The 372-room hotel has a new casual eatery, Fredericks, joining the legendary Redwood Room bar, which retained its Prohibition-era charm while adding stylish new furniture and floorings. The iconic bar features restored prints from Gustav Klimt discovered in the building during the remodel. Website: https://www.sonesta.com/.
