Witness Free Opera at Oracle Park
San Francisco Opera partners with the San Francisco Giants for Opera at the Ballpark, a free live simulcast of Charles Gounod’s "Romeo and Juliet" (Roméo et Juliette) on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. at Oracle Park.
Event InformationExperience Gounod’s romantic masterpiece at the home of the San Francisco Giants while seated on the field or in the stands. The simulcast performance will be transmitted live from the stage of the War Memorial Opera House in high definition (HD) to the 71-foot-high x 153-foot-wide HD Video Board at Oracle Park, the third largest video board in Major League Baseball and the largest video board in California (it's 45% larger than San Francisco’s biggest movie theater!). Performance-quality audio combined with Oracle Park’s upgraded screen creates a greater, live, open-air operatic experience than ever before. Opera at the Ballpark offers the unique opportunity for Bay Area residents to picnic on the baseball field at one of San Francisco’s most popular sports and entertainment venues. Whether an attendee loves opera already or a newcomer, everybody is welcome to experience this extraordinary art form. Full of “dramatic” and “emotional moments” (The Jerusalem Post), this French operatic adaptation of William Shakespeare’s beloved love story will be staged in a production by Opéra de Monte-Carlo Director Jean-Louis Grinda that depicts the Renaissance Verona setting. French-Canadian conductor Yves Abel leads the international cast, with tenor Bryan Hymel and soprano Nadine Sierra as Romeo and Juliet and also featuring Lucas Meachem as Mercutio, James Creswell as Friar Lawrence, Timothy Mix as Count Capulet, Daniel Montenegro as Tybalt and Philip Skinner as the Duke of Verona. The Sept. 21 simulcast of "Romeo and Juliet" marks the 16th free simulcast presented by San Francisco Opera and the 12th at Oracle Park. Previous Oracle Park shows have included classics and fan favorites such as "Carmen," "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Aida," and 2017's "Don Giovanni" attracted more than 28,000 fans. The ballpark venue lends itself to unique audience engagements, in addition to fun, interactive in-performance entertainment.
