Commonwealth is a casual fine dining restaurant located in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission District serving Modern Progressive American cuisine. Co-owner and chef of Commonwealth, Jason Fox, has been creating one of the most unique dining experiences in the Bay Area since it opened in 2010. His cuisine is ever-evolving, combining the best products with modern technique and international influences. The cozy, minimalist dining room seats 35, with room for 10 seated at the bar. If there is a buyout, they can accommodate 50 people including seating at the bar, or 70 for a cocktail party with passed appetizers. Chef Fox aims to give guests something they don’t expect, taking a common ingredient and changing it to give the dish an element of surprise that’s rooted in familiarity. The wine list at Commonwealth is also notable and eclectic, featuring exciting producers and wines from all over the world. Most of the list features typically lighter varietals that are food-friendly, rather than high-alcohol, heavy wines that would over-power the dishes. Open since 2010, Commonwealth has been awarded one Michelin star; Chef Fox earned a 2013 StarChefs Rising Star Chef Award; and the restaurant received three stars from the San Francisco Chronicle, where critic Michael Bauer noted, “A fundamental shift is occurring in the restaurant business, with chefs producing serious food in casual surroundings. And Commonwealth is the pacesetter.”
