June 1, 2016 – At its 106th Annual Luncheon today, the San Francisco Travel Association presented the 2016 Crystal Bridge Award to UBM LLC and the Game Developers Conference.
Now in its seventh year, the Crystal Bridge Award is given annually to honor major convention customers that bring outstanding events with significant impact to San Francisco. Past awards have been presented to American Bar Association, American Geophysical Union, Oracle, Salesforce.com, and the American College of Surgeons.
“In 2002, we were first asked by UBM to check availability for the Game Developers Conference, known as GDC. We knew it would fit nicely into our new building, Moscone West, after meeting in San Jose for many years,” said John Reyes, San Francisco Travel executive vice president and chief sales officer.
“They booked for 2005 with 10,000 attendees. They added an extra building by 2007 and by 2010 they were in all three buildings of Moscone Center with over 18,000 attendees. In 2016, GDC had over 27,000 attendees, breaking their own record,” Reyes continued.
“They have been flexible, meeting in nontraditional dates, and a great partner. It's a fun and exciting event and you can feel the positive energy in Moscone Center when they are here (as long as you don't step on all the attendees sitting on the floor),” Reyes added. “We are proud to be their preferred city.”
The Crystal Bridge Award was accepted by GDC General Manager Meggan Scavio.
“San Francisco is not only a top travel destination for our International attendees, it is the epicenter of the tech community making it the ideal location to hold an event for the best and brightest of the video game industry,” said Scavio. “We are proud to work with SF Travel and the Moscone Center to make this the home base for a fast-growing and evolving game market.”
