At its 105th Annual Luncheon meeting today, the San Francisco Travel Association presented the Silver Cable Car Award to the “first responders” of San Francisco’s Police and Fire Departments.

At its 105th Annual Luncheon meeting today, the San Francisco Travel Association presented the Silver Cable Car Award to the “first responders” of San Francisco’s Police and Fire Departments.

Since 1965, San Francisco Travel has presented the Silver Cable Car award to an individual or organization that has made a significant contribution to San Francisco’s visitor industry. Past recipients have included: Monique Moyer, executive director of the Port of San Francisco; author Armistead Maupin; the San Francisco Giants; the San Francisco Pride Celebration; Steve Silver, creator of “Beach Blanket Babylon” and United Airlines.

The award was presented by San Francisco Travel 2015/2016 Chair Anna Marie Presutti, vice president/general manager, Nikko Hotels International/Hotel Nikko San Francisco, to San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr and San Francisco Fire Department Chief Joanne Hayes-White on behalf of their respective organizations.

Citing their “brave and selfless service to visitors and residents alike,” Presutti said, “This year we honor a group of San Franciscans who serve all of us with distinction.  Their work is integral to the well-being of our city and to its continued appeal to travelers around the world.

“As the general manager of the Hotel Nikko, I have seen these men and women on the job almost every day.  And I know that I could never do my job without knowing they are ready to do theirs.

“They are San Francisco’s first responders.  Specifically, they are the men and women of the San Francisco Police Department and the San Francisco Fire Department.  Both departments have been protecting our city for more than 160 years.  In times of crisis, they have been—and always will be—here to keep us safe.  But it is their day-to-day presence that matters most.   People who visit San Francisco do so knowing that they can rely on these dedicated civil servants to help them with anything from getting accurate directions to guiding them through a genuine emergency.

“I think I can speak for all my peers in the hotel community when I say that we treat visitors to our properties as if they were visitors in our own homes.  Their safety is always among our primary concerns.  We wouldn’t be able to make them feel at home without knowing the incredibly brave men and women of the San Francisco Police and Fire Departments were beside us.”
