June 10, 2013 — At its 103rd Annual Luncheon meeting on June 18, the San Francisco Travel Association will present the Silver Cable Car Award to Monique Moyer, executive director, Port of San Francisco.
The Silver Cable Car Award is presented annually by San Francisco Travel to an individual or organization that has made a significant contribution to San Francisco’s visitor industry.
More than 1,000 people are expected to attend the luncheon at Moscone West, 800 Howard St., on June 18. The event begins with a networking reception at 11 a.m., followed by the lunch and program. Individual tickets are $160. For more information and tickets, visit www.sanfrancisco.travel/partners.
“Monique Moyer is a very special person in San Francisco especially for the travel and tourism industry,” said Joe D’Alessandro, president and CEO of San Francisco Travel. “There is very little that she hasn’t personally touched or enabled to happen in San Francisco, especially with infrastructure,” citing her work on Moscone South when she was in the private sector and Moscone West when she was director of public finance as well as AT&T Park and the de Young Museum, and more recent projects and initiatives including the Exploratorium, James R. Herman cruise ship terminal and 34th America’s Cup.
In videotaped remarks, Lt. Governor of California and former Mayor Gavin Newsom said “I think the best the thing we did in the years when I was Mayor was to get Monique Moyer to run the port.”

The Commission commends Monique for her contribution and leadership in this effort and congratulates her on receiving the Silver Cable Car award,” noted Doreen Woo Ho, president, Port Commission.
Former chair of the San Francisco Travel Board of Directors and current Super Bowl 50 committee member Pat Gallagher in congratulating Moyer on her award stated that the “The Silver Cable Car represents the ‘best of San Francisco.’”
Accolades from all quarters are not new to Moyer. In 2002 she received the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce Public Managerial Leadership Award. She has been named annually as one of the San Francisco Business Times 150 Influential Women in Business from 2005-2011 and became “Ever Influential” in 2012.
Moyer is currently the Executive Director of the Port of San Francisco, an appointment of then Mayor Gavin Newsom in 2004. She serves at the pleasure of current Mayor Edwin Lee and a five-member Port Commission. She is the second woman to serve as Executive Director in the Port’s 150-year history and one of only three female port directors nationwide (out of 85). She is the longest-serving Port Director since the Port transferred to the City & County of San Francisco in 1969. The Port of San Francisco is 7½ miles long and is home to a fishing fleet, cruise ships, Fisherman’s Wharf, AT&T Park and many other entrepreneurial entities and water spots. Moyer manages a staff of 235 and a budget of $70 million.
In addition she sits on the non-profit boards of the Mid-Peninsula Housing Coalition, the Foundation of the Fine Arts Museums, and is Vice Chair of the California Association of Port Authorities.
Previously, Moyer served as the City’s Director of Public Finance under Mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr. (1997–2004). In addition to managing the City’s $2 billion municipal debt portfolio, Ms. Moyer represented Mayor Brown at CalPERS, the United Airlines bankruptcy and numerous other issues of financial complexity. Prior to joining the government sector in 1996, Ms. Moyer previously held officer positions with two separate investment banking firms who specialized in municipal finance.
Moyer was born in Hemet, CA and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Grinnell College, Iowa. She resides in San Mateo with her two children and husband, Michael Moyer.
Previous recipients of the Silver Cable Car award include Herb Caen, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist with the “San Francisco Chronicle”; Willie Mays of the San Francisco Giants; Alessandro Baccari, the “Mayor of Fisherman’s Wharf”; Jackson K. Hu, one of the impresarios behind the Chinese New Year parade and festival; Ruth Asawa, noted Japanese American artist; U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein; the San Francisco 49ers; Steve Silver of “Beach Blanket Babylon”; Kary Schulman, Grants for the Arts; the San Francisco Pride Celebration; Carol Shorenstein Hays, SHN; cable car operators and last year’s recipient, Armistead Maupin, author of 10 novels including the eight-volume Tales of the City series.
