How to Get Married in San Francisco

Marriage License and Civil Ceremonies at San Francisco City Hall

To make an online reservation to pickup your Marriage License or host your Civil/Commitment Ceremony at San Francisco City Hall, click here. Separate appointments are required for obtaining a marraige license and/or for the ceremony. Reservations can be made up to 90 days in advance.

Requirements to be legally married in California

- Couple must apply for and pay for a marriage license issued by a County Clerk, and
- Ceremony must take place in California within 90 days of when the marriage license is issued, and
- Ceremony must be performed by an authorized person under CA Family Code Sections 400-401

San Francisco Marriage License and Civil Ceremony Fees

Marriage license: San Francisco's marriage license fee is $100 (subject to change) plus $5 convenience fee payable by credit card at the time of booking appointment online. No refunds.
Civil Ceremony: San Francisco's Civil Ceremony fee is $77 (subject to change) plus $5 convenience fee payable by credit card at the time of booking the appointment online. No refunds.

Same Sex Marriages

On June 28, 2013, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circut dissolved the stay of the order enjoining the enforcement of Proposition 8. Attorney General Kamala D. Harris declared that the United States Supreme Court's historic opinion in Hollingsworth v. Perry means that every county in the State of California must now recognize the right of same sex couples to legally marry.

Changing Your Name in San Francisco

To change your name on your social security card (which you can then use to update your drivers license, passport, and other legal documents) bring the required materials to the Social Security Administration office located at 560 Kearny St. (between California and Sacramento Streets).
