@Large: Ai Weiwei's Exhibition at Alcatraz
From September 27 to April 26 2015, celebrated Chinese artist Ai Weiwei's highly-anticipated exhibition "@Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz" will call the island home.
The exhibition features seven site specific installations in four different locations, including three never open to the public. The works are meant to explore questions of human rights and freedom of expression in the context of incarceration, detainment and protest. Ai Weiwei's Chinese passport is currently revoked, so don't expect him to make an appearance.
Tickets for @Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz are on sale now at Alcatraz Cruises. Individuals may purchase tickets up to three months in advance of their visit. Given its popularity, it is suggested you purchase tickets several weeks in advance. This exhibition is included at no additional cost as part of the Alcatraz Island tour ticket price.
Didn't plan three months ahead? A limited number of Early Bird Exhibition tickets are available on the 8:45 am departure. This ticket includes the round-trip ferry service from Pier 33 to Alcatraz, a greeting and orientation at the dock, a commemorative @Large gift, regular Alcatraz admission and the Cellhouse Audio Tour.
