A Visitor's Guide to Wellness in the Presidio

If getting active is on your list of things to do, there are five great ways to wellness available in the Presidio. This extraordinary park has 1,500 acres where everyone can exercise, play, and appreciate nature. From beautiful trail adventures to intense rock-climbing experiences, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

1. Take a Bike Ride

Biking around the Presidio is just one of the best ways to get your body moving while exploring its amazing scenery. Rent a bike from Presidio Sports Basement and travel through the park's 15 miles of biking pathways. Be sure to make stops at places like Fort Port, Inspiration Point and Crissy Field to take in the views.


2. Challenge yourself

If you’re looking for something new and challenging, Planet Granite is the place for you. Open to all ages and experience levels, this gym offers 45-foot high rock climbing walls and 25,000 square feet of climbing terrain, all with beautiful views of the Crissy Field waterfront. Beginners can learn the ropes with introductory lessons that come with rental gear. Temporarily closed.

Did someone say Tee Time? The Presidio has its own golf course where you can practice your swing in an intimate forest setting. Play all 18 holes or perfect your game at the driving range and 6-hole practice putting and chipping green.

3. Get Your Workout On

There are plenty of places in the Presidio to break a sweat. The Presidio Community YMCA is equipped with a weight room, basketball court, exercise machines, a cycling studio, and more. Take some laps around the pool at Presidio Community YMCA, get hopping at House of Air trampoline park, or practice your baseball swing at Batter’s Box. Head to the Main Parade Ground to use the green lawn as your own personal yoga studio with a view! Temporarily closed.


4. Take a Hike

Appreciate the outdoors on one of the Presidio's 12 hiking trails. If you love hiking with a side of expansive ocean views, you'll be impressed with the majestic route along the Batteries to Bluffs Trail. This route snakes along the Presidio's western shoreline and brings you right to Baker Beach and Marshall's Beach. Take this hike right before sunset for a tranquil experience.

You can also find extraordinary public art by Andy Goldsworthy along trails like the Bay Area Ridge Trail and Lovers' Lane. See Goldsworthy's "Spire", a 100-foot-tall sculpture made of 37 Monterey cypress trunks with a tapering peak, and "Wood Line", a sculpture that extends more than 1,200 feet across the forest floor.

Within the Presidio’s 24-mile trail network, there’s a three-mile loop that everyone can enjoy no matter their mode of travel – be it by foot, bike, wheelchair, or stroller. The loop showcases the best of the Presidio and includes portions of six park trails: Bay Area Ridge TrailJuan Bautista de Anza National Historic TrailCalifornia Coastal TrailPresidio Promenade, and Park Trail. Along the way, you'll enjoy forest groves, historic buildings and incredible views of San Francisco Bay.


5. Meditate at a scenic overlook

If getting your heart rate up isn't exactly your definition of "wellness", you can channel your inner zen while meditating at one of the Presidio's eight scenic overlooks, which can be accessed along the Presidio Trails. Baker Beach has a beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge, as does the Pacific Overlook and the Golden Gate Overlook. Walk or bike to these overlooks for spectacular views and a great chance to relax in nature.
