Friday Nights at the de Young

Looking for something to do on Friday nights in the summer? Starting at 5 p.m., the de Young Museum offers an annual program of after-hours art "happenings." In Friday Nights at the de Young, the museum’s public spaces fill up with an eclectic mix of free live cultural performances, film, open artist studio hours, and much more. Engage with artists in drop-in workshops, wander the art galleries, enjoy a sunset in the observation tower or grab a drink at the specialty cocktail bar.

Activities are new and different each week, coinciding with special themes inspired by the permanent collection, artistic topics important to the community, and special exhibitions such as The Summer of Love Experience, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love. Season 13 of Friday Nights kicks off on June 2, 2017. Planned highlights include:

The Maze film screening and poetry reading with Michael McClure
June 9 at 7 p.m. in the Koret Auditorium
At the age of 22, Michael McClure gave his first poetry reading at the legendary Six Gallery event in San Francisco, where Allen Ginsburg first read Howl. Today, McClure is more active than ever, writing and performing his poetry at festivals and clubs across the country. The Maze is a KPIX-TV documentary from 1967, presented by McClure, about the Haight-Ashbury district in San Francisco and how it is increasingly recognized as a center for the 'hippie' counter-culture movement.

Mouse in the House: A Conversation with Stanley Mouse
Aug. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Koret Auditorium
A conversation between rock poster artist Stanley Mouse and Victoria Binder, paper conservator for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

Discussion with Bill Ham
Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Koret Auditorium
A conversation between pioneering psychedelic light show artist Bill Ham and Julian Cox, Chief Curator and Founding Curator of Photography, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

The de Young café offers a special Friday night menu in addition to a specialty cocktail, beer, and wine cash bar. Plus, the observation tower is open until 8 p.m., giving guests an opportunity to catch the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean — just as long as the fog hasn’t rolled in.

Located within Golden Gate Park, 2017's Friday Nights at the de Young run weekly from June 2 to Aug.18, with additional Fridays on Sept. 8, Oct. 13, and Nov. 10. Fees apply for galleries, special exhibitions, dining, and cocktails. For more information, please visit the de Young online.
