How to Get Married in San Francisco

So you're here to get hitched. Congratulations! Here's a round-up of all the services you might need to make your big day as easy, fun, and memorable as possible for you, your special someone, and your honored guests.

Marriage License and Civil Ceremonies at San Francisco City Hall

To make an online reservation to apply for and obtain your Marriage License or host your Civil/Commitment Ceremony at San Francisco City Hall, click here. Separate appointments are required for obtaining a marriage license and/or for the ceremony. Reservations can be made up to 90 days in advance.

Requirements to be legally married in California

  • Couple must apply for and pay for a marriage license issued by a County Clerk.
  • Ceremony must take place in California within 90 days of when the marriage license is issued.
  • Ceremony must be performed by an authorized person under CA Family Code Sections 400-401.

Changing Your Name in San Francisco

If you choose to change your name, the new name must be included in the marriage license application.

Visitor Information Center

The official go-to spot for maps, tickets, tours, and any question you could possibly need answered. Located in The Moscone Center (749 Howard St.), San Francisco's Visitor Information Center has been in operation for more than 30 years and has just reopened with an innovative facelift which includes interactive touch screens. Other San Francisco Visitor Center locations include Macy's Union Square (170 O'Farrell St.), the Chinatown Visitor Information Center (625 Kearny St.), and the California Welcome Center at PIER 39.
