Holidays Shopping at the Asian Art Museum

Not only does the Asian Art Museum carry a world-class art collection, but it is also an ideal location to find unique events and pick up some holiday gifts.

For a magical holiday experience with your family, the Museum's signature New Year's Bell Ring Ceremony offers a merry and unique opportunity to celebrate the new year. Led by Reverend Gengo Akiba with remarks by community leader Yoshie Akiba, the ceremony includes a purification ritual and chanting of the Buddhist Heart Sutra. Particpants take turns ringing the 2,100-pound 16th-century Japanese temple bell to leave behind ill luck from the previous year and curb the 108 mortal desires which torment humans, according to Buddhist belief. Please note that this event is first-come, first-served but is free with admission. Bell-ringers are capped at 108, and tickets are available at admissions. Please check the site for detailed hours on this popular New Year's Eve event and other holiday fun.

At the Museum's store,  you'll find unique items to delight everyone on your shopping list. For your foodie friends, you'll find kitchen gadgets and delicious treats like white soy sauce and brown rice ramen, and your fashionista friends will be thrilled with handmade jewelry and silk scarves. Pick up Asian Art-inspired holiday ornaments, or a plush version of the popular ancient Chinese bronzo rhino. Remember, all purchases support the museum's educational programs and exhibitions.
