Important Information
For International Travelers

The do's, don'ts, and essential reminders to ensure your journey to San Francisco is a success.

Coming to San Francisco from another country? First off, fantastic! Second of all, welcome! Third and finally, here are some important details from our partners at U.S. Travel that you should keep in mind as you prepare for departure. These will make your journey into the U.S. as smooth as San Francisco's gliding fog!

Before You Depart

Prepare Required Documentation

  • Valid Passport - Must be valid for at least six months before your intended stay, unless you are a citizen of an exempt country.
  • Visa or ESTA - Travelers from most countries need a visitor (B-1/B-2) via. Travelers from Visa Waiver Program countries must apply for ESTA.

For visa applicants, be sure to:

  1. Complete the online DS-160 form.
  2. Pay the visa fee ($185).
  3. Bring all required documents (passport, photo, and supporting materials).

In need of expedited entry? If you are eligible, enroll in a Trusted Traveler Program like Global Entry, or consider utilizing CBP's free app, Mobile Passport Control.

While a valid visa or ESTA does not guarantee entry into the U.S. and admission is determined by CBP officers at the port of entry, the vast majority of travelers will have no challenges entering the U.S. lawfully.

At Your U.S. Port of Entry

Here's what to expect from CBP Officers. You may be asked:

  • What is the purpose of your visit?
  • How long will you stay?
  • Where will you be staying?
  • What do you plan to do?
  • Do you have any criminal history or visa violations?

And here are some tips for a smooth entry:

  • Be honest, clear, and concise.
  • Have printed copies of reservations or confirmations for flights, hotel stays, or itineraries.
  • Be prepared to answer questions about your past travel to the U.S., as well as visa or ESTA history. This may include dates, locations, and timelines.
  • Stay calm and respectful.

All travelers must complete the 6059B Custom Declaration Form. Travelers must declare the following:

  • Agricultural products, such as food, plants, etc.
  • Currency over $10,000 USD.
  • Merchandise beyond personal use.

Do's and Don'ts for Successful Travel

Do:

  • Carry all required documentation.
