At SFMOMA: The Director's Picks

Neal Benezra, Helen and Charles Schwab Director, SFMOMA, provides his thoughts on key must-see picks at the museum

The new San Francisco Museum of Modern Art offers visitors seven floors of incredible works of art to explore. Eighteen exhibitions are be on display in the areas of painting and sculpture, photography, architecture and design, and media arts.

The expanded museum has nearly triple the gallery space of our former building, and includes 170,000 square feet of new and renovated galleries, allowing us to display more of our outstanding holdings of more than 33,000 modern and contemporary artworks than ever before. Outdoor terraces and sculpture gardens beckon you to take in the view as well as the art. Free public spaces are filled with light. There’s so much to see, you’ll want to come back again and again.

If you only have time for a short visit, here are some of my favorite artworks (including gems from the unparalleled Doris and Donald Fisher Collection) and architectural features of SFMOMA. We can’t wait to welcome you to the museum.

  • Mark Rothko, No. 14, 1960 (Floor 2)
  • Frida Kahlo, Frieda and Diego Rivera< (Floor 2)
  • Alexander Calder, Constellation (Floor 3)
  • Donald Judd, Copper armchair (Floor 4)
  • Diane Arbus gallery (Floor 4)
