Tour the USS Pampanito on San Francisco Bay
Dive into San Francisco's maritime heritage aboard a World War II-era submarine
Docked on Pier 45 in Fisherman’s Wharf, the USS Pampanito is a living artifact where U.S. naval history comes to life.
Commissioned in 1943, the Pampanito completed six patrols in the Pacific, sinking six Japanese ships and damaging four more. Today, the submarine serves as a family-friendly museum and memorial operated by the San Francisco Maritime National Park Association. Visitors can board this National Historic Landmark and learn about technologies that changed the course of the war.
Step Inside A Submarine
Take an immersive journey through time aboard the USS Pampanito, one of the world’s best-preserved World War II submarines. Meticulously restored to her original configuration, the Pampanito features fully operational equipment showcasing the height of World War II technology. Audio tours guide you through the vessel and share sailors’ experiences in their own words. Listen to stories of high-stakes patrols as you explore the cramped quarters where the crew lived and served.
Stories from the Seas
Just steps from the submarine, the Pampanito’s Visitor Center provides even more insight into life beneath the waves. Interactive exhibits detail the submarine’s inner workings, from the torpedoes and engines to the communications system. Watch videos and hear original crew members describe serving on the submarine and rescuing POWs. Smaller rotating exhibits highlight historical objects from the Pampanito’s extensive collection.

Pop culture enthusiasts will appreciate the submarine’s screen appearances, including “The Winds of War” and the cult comedy “Down Periscope.” You can even see a detailed model used in the award-winning miniseries “War and Remembrance.”
