Some of America's Best Beer Gardens Are in San Francisco

San Francisco has the best of everything: Iconic bridges, amazing celebrations (Pride, Bay to Breakers and Fleet Week, to name a few) and, of course, the food and cocktails will knock your socks off. Now you'll have to add two of America's best beer gardens to the list.

Food & Wine named Zeitgeist and Biergarten as two of the best beer gardens in America. Be prepared to throw your traditional view of a beer garden out the window because these places have a distinctly San Francisco twist. Here's where beer-lovers need to raise a glass.

Neighborhood: Mission

Address: 199 Valencia St., San Francisco CA 94103

With a punk rock jukebox and an official cycling team, Zeitgeist does not lack for Mission character, but its large outdoor space has the comfortable feel of a traditional beer garden. Sixty-four taps pour a wide variety of mostly American craft beers, including many from California and the Pacific Northwest.

Neighborhood: Hayes Valley

Address: 424 Octavia St., San Francisco CA 94102

This asphalt garden from the owners of the German restaurant Suppenkuche has a minimalist focus on quality, serving just a handful of excellent pilsners, wheat beers and schwarzbiers in huge one-liter steins. Snacks include flavorful bratwurst and fluffy pretzels.
