Get Your Ride On with Lyft Bay Wheels

Exploring San Francisco’s vibrant neighborhoods by bike is a breeze with Bay Wheels, the city’s official bike share program, operated by Lyft.

With a fleet of more than 7,000 bikes—including both classic pedal-powered and electric-assist models—and more than 550 docking stations, Bay Wheels offers an eco-friendly, affordable, and flexible way to explore the San Francisco's diverse districts, visit our top attractions, and experience everything that the city has to offer.

What is Bay Wheels?

Bay Wheels is a regional bike share system serving San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, Emeryville, and San Jose. The program provides both docked and hybrid e-bikes, allowing riders to pick up and return bikes at designated stations or, in the case of e-bikes, lock them to public bike racks within the service area.

Riders can choose from various pricing options: single rides starting at $3.99, day passes for $15, monthly memberships at $29, or annual memberships for $150. Additionally, the "Bike Share for All" program offers discounted rates for eligible low-income residents, with memberships starting at $5 per year.

How To Ride

  1. Download the Lyft App: Available on iOS and Android, the app allows you to locate and unlock bikes
  2. Find A Bike: Use the app's map to locate nearby bikes or docking stations.
  3. Unlock and Ride: Scan the QR code on the bike to unlock it and start your journey.
  4. End Your Ride: Return the bike to any Bay Wheels docking station or, for e-bikes, lock it to a public bike rack within the service area for a small fee.

Where to Go

The simple answer here is almost anywhere! With stations throughout San Francisco, you can reach all corners of the city at your own pace. Here are a couple of fun rides we recommend, along with what you'll see and where you may want to stop on your journey.

Ride Idea
Golden Gate Park to the Ocean

Grab a Lyft from your hotel and head to the Haight-Ashbury to experience one of San Francisco’s most iconic neighborhoods. After you explore, hop on a Bay Wheels bike at the entrance of Golden Gate Park and head west on JFK Drive. You’ll pedal through the heart of the park, passing sights like the Conservatory of Flowers, the de Young Museum, and the Bison Paddock. Continue west as you wind through the park’s lush scenery. When you reach Ocean Beach, dock your bike for a walk in the sand or enjoy a scenic ride along Sunset Dunes

Distance: Approximately 4 miles

Ride Idea
Pacific Heights to the Inner Richmond

Grab a Bay Wheels bike by your accommodation and head over to Jane of Fillmore in San Francisco's Pacific Heights neighborhood. After a bite to eat—and some shopping, of course—jump back on a bike and head West on Clay street to experience San Francisco’s Slow Streets program. Designed to improve the experience for pedestrians and cyclists, the Slow Streets program is a great way to see San Francisco’s architecture and experience different neighborhoods at your own pace. About a mile later, you'll run into Arguello Boulevard, which means you've reached the Inner Richmond neighborhood. Ride a couple blocks south to Clement Street, where there will be plenty of places to park your bike and explore local businesses and restaurants.
